Chandrayaan-2 scans Mitra crater

  1. Indian National Space Organization (ISRO) has released a series of images of craters captured by Chandrayaan 2 on the lunar surface. The pictures were captured by the Terrain Mapping Camera-2 (TMC-2).
  2. The craters whose pictures have been captured include Jackson, Mach, Sommerfeld, Mitra, Hermite, Plaskett, Rozhdestvenskiy and Kirkwood.
  3. Jackson crater is located in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the moon. It has a diameter of nearly 71 km. The Korolev crater is a 437 km crater which has several small craters of varying sizes.
  4. Sommerfeld crater is located on the far side of the moon with a diameter of nearly 169 km. relatively It has a flat interior surrounded by a ring mountain and a number of smaller craters along the edge. It is named after Arnold Sommerfeld, a German physicist.
  5. North east of Sommerfeld crater lies the Kirkwood crater named after American astronomer Daniel Kirkwood. It is 68kms n diameter.
  6. Mitra crater has a diameter of 92 km. It is named after Indian physicist Sisir Kumar Mitra who is known for his pioneering work in the field of ionosphere and radiophysics.  The crater is located at the western outer rim of another crater called Mach.
  7. Hermite crater was discovered by NASA in 2009 and is believed to be the coldest place in the solar system, with temperatures touching -247 °C.
