Happiness refers to a mental and emotional state arising out of contentment, satisfaction or enjoyment. It is a subjective experience which brings elation.
Happiness is brought about by generally positive thoughts and feelings. It is a broad term that encompasses a family of pleasant emotional states, such as joy, amusement, satisfaction, gratification, euphoria, and triumph.
Happiness may mean different things to different people/ in different contexts-
Aristotle stated that happiness (also being well and doing well) is the only thing that humans desire for their own sake, unlike riches, honour, health or friendship. For Aristotle, the term eudaimonia, which is translated as ‘happiness’ or ‘flourishing’ is an activity rather than an emotion or a state.
In Buddhism the ultimate happiness is only achieved by overcoming craving in all forms.
In Hinduism, transcending the duality between atman and brahman to realize true oneself is happiness.
