Oysters, a global delicacy, may soon help fight pollution

News:

  1. Oysters can serve as early warning givers on pollution in the ocean.

Important Facts:

  1.   Oysters are attached to rocks or other supports in the ocean and are ideal for real-time analysis as they notice the surrounding noises, temperature and light variations.
  2. Oysters stationed near offshore oil platforms can detect minute amounts of hydrocarbons as they constantly filter water and react instantly to the slightest amount of oil.
  3. That could alert scientists to tiny infrastructure cracks before they become catastrophic oil spills that threaten wildlife and coastal communities.
  4. The observations have been tested in Barents Sea off Norway and Russia and Bay of Arcachon in France.
