Penkoottu is planning a campaign to ensure that women workers ‘right to sit’ becomes a reality in all shops across the State.
They have been in the forefront of the Right to Sit campaign as it was found that employees, mostly women,in many shops, especially textile shops, were not allowed to sit during their working hours.
Its relentless struggle resulted in the State government enacting an amendment to the Kerala Shops and Establishments Act in July 2018.The amendment made it mandatory for employers to provide a chair or stool to the employees and also limit their working hours to eight.
Penkoottu is an organisation of women which came together for the first time in 2009 to raise voices against the lack of usable toilets in SM Street,Kozhikode,Kerala. The literal meaning of Penkoottu is women for each other.
