Q. Consider the following statements:
1.Light rare earth elements are abundantly available.
2.India is mostly import dependent for its rare earth supplies.
3.India does not have deposits of rare earth metals.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Statement 1 and 2 are correct. Rare Earth Elements are divided into two forms: Heavy and Light Rare Earth Elements. Light rare earth elements are abundantly available, while heavy elements are more critical due to their high demand and less availability. India is 100 per cent import dependent for its rare earth supplies due to its mining being restricted to public sector undertakings (PSUs).
Statement 3 is incorrect. India has 6% of the world’s rare earth reserves, it only produces 1% of global output, and meets most of its requirements of such minerals from China.
