Q. With reference to Aditya-L1 Mission, consider the following statements:
Statement-I: The spacecraft will initially be placed around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system.
Statement-II: Four payloads on the Aditya-L1 spacecraft will observe the Sun from the (L1) Lagrange point.
Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

[A] Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II is the correct explanation for Statement-I

[B] Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II is not the correct explanation for Statement-I

[C] Statement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect

[D] Statement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct

Answer: D
Notes:

Explanation –

Statement 1 is incorrect. The spacecraft will initially be placed in a Low Earth Orbit. The orbit will then be adjusted to become more elliptical. The spacecraft will be propelled towards the L1 point using onboard propulsion. It will then exit Earth’s gravitational Sphere of Influence. After leaving Earth’s SOI, the spacecraft will finally be injected into a large halo orbit around the Lagrange point (L1).

Statement 2 is correct. There is total seven payloads on the Aditya-L1 spacecraft. Out of which, four payloads directly view the Sun. The remaining three payloads carry out in-situ studies of particles and fields at the Lagrange point L1.
