Q. With reference to Mangrove Forests consider the following statements:
1.They help in reducing coastal erosion.
2.They help in storing blue carbon.
3.Mangrove forests along the coast of Tamil Nadu is expected to rise in the coming years.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
Statement 1: Mangroves provide natural infrastructure and protection by preventing erosion and absorbing storm surge impacts during extreme weather events such as hurricanes. Their dense roots help bind and build soils.
Statement 2: Mangrove forests capture massive amounts of carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, and then trap and store them in their carbon-rich flooded soils. This buried carbon is known as “blue carbon”.
Statement 3: The statement is incorrect. According to the recent study, by 2070, Indian mangroves will further reduce and shift by around 50%, especially in southern India, due to decline in suitable habitats along the east and west coasts of India. Mangroves in the southwest and southeast of the country that cover four states, namely, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, will be the most vulnerable.
