Road accidents kill more kids, young adults globally than illness

According to the Global status report on road safety 2018, released by World Health Organization, Road accidents claim at least one life every 23 seconds across globe

Global Status:

  1. The number of annual road traffic deaths has reached 1.35 million in 2016 from 1.25 million in 2013
  2. Road traffic injuries are the leading killer of people aged 5-29 years. The burden is disproportionately borne by pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, in particular those living in developing countries.
  3. Between 2013 and 2016, no low-income country could reduce road deaths, while some reductions were observed in 48 middle and high income countries

Status in India

  1. One in every nine fatalities due to road traffic injury between 2013 to 2016, were reported in India.
  2. The death rate (no. of road accident death per lakh population) stood at 22.6
  3. The report says that cities in India have reduced traffic crashes. Despite this, India reported 150,785 deaths in 2016.
