UN body hails Odisha on women reservation

  1. The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has complimented the Odisha government for proposing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies. UN Women is the UN entity working for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
  2. In 2018, the Odisha Assembly had passed a resolution by unanimous voice vote for providing 33% reservation for women in Legislative Assemblies and Parliament.
  3. The Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2008 (commonly known as Women Reservation Bill) seeks to reserve one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies.  The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2010 but is still pending in Lok Sabha.
