When should a new candidate start preparation for UPSC IAS 2023 examination?

The candidates who are willing to appear in the UPSC Exam should start with their preparation now, as almost a year is left for the examination. Every year, lakhs of aspirants appear in the examination and with the easy availability of the study material, competition and the expectation of UPSC is getting tough. Ideally, a dedicated year is required for thorough preparation for UPSC IAS exam.

A brief overview of UPSC IAS Civil Services Exam

For the new aspirants, who are just starting their preparation journey, we are providing a brief overview of the scheme of the examination.

This exam is conducted once a year. It consists of 3 stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination
  2. Mains (Written) Examination
  3. Interview/ Personality Test

The first stage or Preliminary or Prelims Examination is of qualifying nature. It consists of 2 papers i.e. General Studies and CSAT (Aptitude Test). The marks scored in this exam are not added to the final score of the candidate. Aspirants clearing this exam will qualify to appear in the Mains Examination. Questions are asked in the MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) format.

The second Stage or Mains Examination is the written examination, where subjective questions are asked on the basis of syllabus (not strictly). The Mains exam of the UPSC tests the student’s in-depth knowledge and ability to present knowledge instantly. This stage consists of 9 papers: 4 GS Papers, 2 Optional papers, 1 Essay Paper, and 2 Language Papers. This is the crucial stage, which plays a major role in deciding the rank of the aspirant in the final list.
